I measured some pics of anime characters, came up with these as a nice example of anime proportions, and drew this guy to exemplify the measurements. Compared to a 7-head realistic male, this anime male has a more compact torso and longer limbs relative to his height, creating a graceful athletic appearance. I think the tradition of using heads it a bit misleading though, when I was measuring examples I found that two might have almost the exact same body but one's head was noticeably bigger than the other. This character has a largeish head, using a smaller one would have resulted in a figure 10 heads tall. I picked the larger head because it gives the artist a slightly bigger canvas for showing emotions.
This was created specifically for Comangled Productions currently-in-design-phase SF Academy manga project, of which I am the team leader. ^_^
7 heads is for average-height humans in a realistic style. If you studied tall athletes like professional basketball and football players they would be more like 8 heads. Both western and eastern cartoon styles typically use 8 or even 9 heads to create action heroes who are larger than life. And children, in real life and cartoons, are the opposite - they have large heads proportional to their bodies, so they might be only 4 or 5 heads tall proportionally.
First of all: Thanks! One little issue: Your first head covers the height of head and neck... that doesn't make too much sense. If you'd scale your heads in the head-scale down to the real head-size, your character would probably end up with 9 heads. So, while the 8-heads-high-rule is certainly a nice rule of thumb for real anatomy, it's not perfect for anime. But well, you still have the nice numeric scales on the left side of the picture, that ought to suffice. (Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker.)
P.S.: One line for thanking, 8 (in the editor) for critique... Those are the statistics but my feelings are the other way around, ok? Don't be mad at me.

I could practice my male figures, thanks n-n
